Holy Moley!!!

Well, my great luck didn’t hold out for long.

In a split second yesterday afternoon, there was a big boom and Mother Nature came down hard and fast and took down a HUGE tree in our backyard.

Luckily, it fell AWAY from the house and no one and no thing was hurt, but the fence.

It’s scary to think about what can happen in an instant.

The bad news: We’re going to have a LOT less shade. The good news: Maybe the increased sunshine will actually allow me to grow a tomato or two and a blade of grass where the tree was.

Oh my goodness Sue - holy moley is putting it mildly. We had a coupel of giant trees fall in our yard earlier this year. Like you, no one was hurt thankfully, and the house was spared. I'm glad you can see the silver lining.

OMG Sue!! Yikes, that is one giganic tree to come crashing down . . . were you home?? Thank goodness it didn't hit anything or more importantly anyone. I love my shade trees, you are right, you will miss it. Go tomatoes!!

Linda,
It WAS amazing. And, actually, I'm so proud. One tree guy told me that our tree was in his all time top ten list of huge trees.

DC,
Yes, it was a miracle that nothing serious happened...except damage to our bank account!

Sue, I'm glad you're OK and that no one was hurt! Thank goodness it fell away from the house. A tomato garden sounds great though :)

Omg, Sue! It must be a lot of hard work for you to have the whole place cleaned!

I'm just glad it didn't fall in the wrong place.

Well, I guess it's "luck" of some kind if it didn't fall on your house. I'm glad no one was hurt! Hope the cleanup won't be too horrible. *hugs*

Thanks so much guys,
I may call my next post "Holy Moley" too, about the insurance company, ANY insurance company. IT's appalling what they cover and what they DON'T.

Yikes. Thank God no one was hurt.

OMG, this is scary. I am glad that you and the family and the house are okay.

OK, NOW I'm able to comment... don't know what was going on earlier today. Good luck with your insurance company :)

It's amazing how something that's taken decades to grow can fall in seconds. I live in an are with lots of Douglas fir trees. Despite their enormous size they have very shallow root systems and the combination of high wind and heavy rain bring some down every time. I'm glad no one was hurt and it fell away from the house. I hope you are having a great day. Blessings...Mary

Wow...that looks like a really scary surprise. Over the past few months I have had my fair share of fallen trees. That one really spooks me. I always love my shade in the summer time as well as my kids...lol...Keep up the great work with your articles and please stop by my health blog sometime. Hi Kathleen,
Double yikes!

Thanks, Cyn.

Ginny, thanks for letting me know.

Mary,
It is soooo interesting that you say that. It is positively incredible how shallow the roots are. The hole left by the HUGE tree is less than a foot deep. It ripped out two (or more) other trees. A much smaller tree left a hole about 12 feet deep. So weird. And amazing that no one got hurt.

Hi Davon,
Welcome!

These bigs trees ARE scary. I guess living in a potato field is a lot safer!
