It is positively incredible how shallow the roots are. The hole left by the HUGE tree is less than a foot deep. It ripped out two (or more) other trees. I live in an are with lots of Douglas fir trees. Despite their enormous size they have very shallow root systems and the combination of high wind and heavy rain bring some down every time.
