More Great Eating In California – Vegan Food And Cupcakes

I have to tell you about this place that is sooo California and sooo fantastic. It's called Native Foods Café, which actually sounds a bit politically incorrect, but it's just the opposite.

It's the most imaginative, freshest riot of plant-based (non-dairy) dishes (organic/vegan/vegetarian, they call themselves) that you can conceive of. The one we went to was in Orange County and the food was served under a YURT-shaped structure. (Of course, it was.)

Just look at this beautiful food!

I ordered the vegan equivalent of a BLT, The BLTease.

WHY would anyone order a regular BLT again? The ONLY difference was that the bacon equivalent (PLEASE don't say you don't like tempeh until you've tasted this) didn’t have the same crispness of real bacon. But that was more than made up for with the crunchy vegetables and the extraordinary bread. The Watermelon Fresca "fresh watermelon, a touch of mint, sweetened with agave" was pretty awesome too!

If you are ever ANYWHERE where there is a Native Foods Café, RUN, don’t walk, to it.

Oh, wait one more thing...We had GREAT cupcakes at Yummy Cupcakes. WHO said cupcakes are dead (in favor of Whoopie Pies)? I'm just not buying it.

A cupcake note: You know, I'm not a fan of Red Velvet Cake (or cupcakes). But I think I may just need to adjust my thinking a bit. Instead of thinking of red velvet cake as a basically failed, not-chocolatey enough cake, maybe I should think of it as a white cake, with tons of food coloring and a drop of cocoa. Nah, it still doesn’t work for me. BUT these Red Velvet Cupcakes WERE good and the cream cheese icing (always the best part) was divine. The Peanut Butter Cupcakes and the Chocolate/Chocolate ones were superb too!

Cupcakes are out and whoopies pies are in? I never got that memo and I went to school in PA Dutch country, so you would think whoopie pie fandom would be on my radar!

I never got it either! Yeah, you lived in Whoopie Pie heaven...

DC is still in the throes of cupcakes, whoopie pies are just starting to catch on. The problem is there are a whole lot of really bad cupcakes out there, and people rhapsodize over them anyway because what they really want is the frosting (and it's a lot less tacky to eat a heavily-frosted cupcake than eat from a can of frosting with a spoon!) IMO they're difficult to make well because cake batter doesn't always work in something that size.

I think the food looks amazing! That's exactly what I'm craving right now. Boy, the watermelon fresca sounds good too.

Tom,
You are so right about all the sub-par cupcakes out there! And, honestly, I could really do without the cupcake. I LOVE icing.

A Whoopie Pie is no better, though, because it has TWO disks of cake, but it IS easier to eat (if you're eating the whole thing).

Em,
We gotta eat some more good stuff together.
