I'm so excited I won:) Thank you for hosting such a great giveaway! The first cookbook I remember using was this really old paper book that was passed down to my mother from her great grandmother. We used to make the best cookies out of that book...:) Thanks for reminding me of the fun cookie times I had with my mom :)
The first cookbook I ever used was my mother's old, beat-up, Better Homes and Gardens cookbook. I think I mentioned in my blog that she gave it to me as a birthday gift a couple of years ago. I'm such a sucker for vintage cookbooks!
The first cookbook I remember using was called 4 Ingredient Cooking, or something. I can't remember if it was only for desserts, I just remember me and my sister in high school making peanut butter cookies.
Congrats to the winners !!!
I remember using this crazy 1970s microwave cookbook my mom still has. Also, church fair cookbooks. Other than that - the standard fare of Joy of Cooking and the Silver Palate Cookbook. Sidenote: I didnt know Barcelona had a cookbook! I love their New Haven restaurant!
Hold on let me check the shelf...
-My mothers old Better Home and Gardens from like the 1950's (her moms)
-Kraft Food and Family Magazines
-The Crock Pot Slow Cooker Cookbook
That's pretty much it. The internet became high speed when I became like 16... what can I say? :)
I remember books my mother used before I actually used one all by myself (because I liked the way the covers looked). But the first one I remember using is the same as yours, Sue, The New York Times cookbook, for a recipe called "California Casserole" (basically ground beef chili and rice with cheese and sliced olives on top). The recipe called for an entire tablespoon of chili powder and a few drops of Tabasco (for one pound of ground beef and a cup of raw rice), and my family didn't like it that way. (In contrast to Adam's internet youth, this was waaaay back when tomatoes came in 20-ounce cans) I still make that recipe today with a lot of modifications, and my parents will now eat it with the whole tablespoon of chili powder.
I remember getting some kids cookbook from the library and making hot coco or something like that. After that, my mom only had one cookbook and it was a very old Betty Crocker one. Black and green. She taught me how to make Chicken and Dumplings from that book.
I remember getting a Betty Crocker cookbook when I was about 14 (?) It had a recipe for a yellow butter cake in it that was fantastic. I made that cake for years!
First one I remember using was the Fannie Farmer cookbook that my dad had!
First on my own was Great Bowls of Fire -- and still one of my favorites.
