Tiny Tip

Leave all your lemons and oranges at room temperature for a few days before you need to squeeze them. You'll get substantially more juice from them than straight from the fridge. Every little bit helps...

Here's a gravy story for all other worshipers of the elixir of Thanksgiving.. My sister and I both roast "stunt turkeys" the day before the holiday that are strictly used for a) drippings for gravy, and b), leftover turkey to send home with people who crave turkey and gravy sandwiches every bit as much as the round one gobbler of Thanksgiving day. We spend all morning nursing stock, roasted vegetables, giblets, madeira, roux, etc., until we've got a good gallon of the stuff... and it's wicked good. Last year, my brother brought his new girlfriend who was lovely in every single way except for the fact that in her culture, asking for a custom designed to-go plate is actually supposed to be really flattering and not at all affronting. Thus, when she asked if she could forego the platter of stuffing, bird, cranberry, potatoes and sweet potato souffle that I'd prepped for her and "just take that pot of gravy home", I was flummoxed. My sisters are even now barely speaking to me... they still talk about "the gravy incident" and how horrified they were when "she who was destined to very soon be the ex-girlfriend of our brother" made off with the gravy...

Ramya,
There IS another way to get a lot of juice from a lemon. Actually a couple. First, you can roll it on the counter, but if it's at room temperature you don't need to.

The other way is to cut it in half and put it in the microwave for about 5 seconds. Then the lemon gives off a lot of juice. But I think that might destroy some vitamin c, so I don't do it that often.

Grace,
I LOVE that WHOLE story. The idea of "stunt" turkeys is brilliant and, of course, the name is hilarious.

YOU GAVE THE LOSER GIRLFRIEND ALL THE LEFTOVER GRAVY??! I'm surprised your family didn't make you pull out another stunt turkey and make some more. And, by the way, that is pretty terrific that you send everyone home with food. Just think if you didn't do that, you could have EIGHTY people for Thanksgiving.
