THANKSGIVING TIPS - Good Things Come In Small Packages

This is an idea I got from the cover of a Gourmet Magazine from November, 2000.

I'm sure the last thing on your mind is garnishing your turkey platter.
Yet this is so easy and so gorgeous that there's no reason NOT TO DO IT!!!

One hour before the turkey comes out of the oven, place 12 Lady Apples (or one per person) around it in the roasting pan. Remove them when you take out the turkey and set them aside. Garnish the serving platter with them. They are just so darned CUTE!!!

Don't confuse them with Pink Lady Apples. Lady Apples are miniature apples. These are how small they are next to Granny Smith and Macintosh Apples.

Those little apples are so cute! I think it's a very good idea, but my dad won't let me touch the turkey.

I DO NOT GET YOUR PARENTS! Don't they understand the gift of your cooking abilities? Most parents would kill to have a kid who WANTED to cook. But are they at least letting you make all of the desserts? Or is there something you're not telling us, like you were responsible for the turkey one year and everyone had to go to the emrgency room?!!!

It's funny. I saw those apples at a farmer's market last week and opted not to get any. I wasn't in love with the taste (at least not of that particular batch), but I hadn't thought of them as a decoration. Maybe I'll go back there this weekend.

Or maybe I'll just shoot myself before Thanksgiving happens - or feed myself to my newly carniverous horse.

Ah ha, you see what I mean about culling your tips? Very useful.

Hi S(d)OC,

It's funny I never ate one raw until you said that and so I tried one. Ehhh! But baked is another story. They're sweet and juicy when cooked.

Don't shoot yourself. Make lists, lots of lists.

Cynthia,

You're sweet.

I need to email your comment to my parents. THEN maybe they will let me do something.
I have never poisoned anyone. Yet...

We always have company, and they don't want to be embarassed by a nontraditional dish. My mom makes everything and stresses herself out. I usually get to make some pies. I've done some appetizers for a few years.

Emiline,

Give your Mom a martini early in the day and then when she's "resting" on the couch, whip the meal together...
